Why a FAST to close the SOA?

"A movement does not depend for its success on the intellectual or material resources of its sponsors; but it depends solely upon the spiritual resources, and fasting is the most known method of adding to those resources.

Fasting is an institution as old as humans. It is my conviction that a fast undertaken out of genuine love cannot have a negative result. It will only bring good in its wake." – Ghandi

March 21 Meeting update - "Close the SOA - FAST"

Monalisa Vu designed a flier to promote the FAST. It announced the kick-off event of April 6th at the Flood Building from noon to 2pm. It also has a tear-off that can be sent to John Savard to let him know who is fasting, on which day(s), and if they will be present at the Flood Building. If you would like a copy of the flier, let me know and I will send it to you.

Bookmark this Page (Ctrl-D), the Website for FAST-2000.

Poster Party - Friday evening, March 31, at USF University Ministry (lower Phelan Hall at the University of San Francisco).

Phone Bank: April 3 and 4, 7-9pm. We will be making calls from University Ministry to SOAW supporters and those who have expressed interest in the FAST urging them to attend the April 6 Kick-off event at the Flood Building, 870 Market street from noon - 2pm.

Brooks Oswald and George Sanchez will work on a theatre piece for the Flood Building for the Kick-off event.

George Sanchez, a USF junior will be writing an Op-Ed piece with the angle of "Youth and Activism." He will also be exploring media outlets for both print and broadcast.

Things we need:

1) Individual contacts to Human Rights organizations: Personal contacts work best. If you have a personal contact within a specific organization and would be willing to personally invite them to participate in "Close the SOA - FAST," let me know via E-mail This way we can keep in clear which organizations are being contacted and by whom.

2) We are looking for a speaker and microphone system for the 6th. Any ideas?

3) Any ideas about music or a musician for the kick-off event?

4) If you have contacts with a Radio station or newspaper, let me know if you will be contacting a media source concerning the April 6th event.

5) March 28: Unitarian Universalist Center (1st U.U. Church), Franklin at the corner of Geary in San Francisco. 6-7:30pm: Meeting of those going to Washington D.C. 7:30-9pm: Media Traing session organized by Mary Manuel and Barbara Trott

Subject: FAST Update
Date: Wed, 8 Mar 2000 11:10:02 -0800
From: John Savard

We are trying to think of an expressive slogan
for FAST 2000 that would describe what we are trying to do/accomplish with the FAST. Some ideas are: "Hungry for Justice" or "Free the SOA 8," or "Free Charlie Litke." If you have any ideas on how to put an image, or a name to FAST 2000, please e-mail me ASAP (savard@usfca.edu). I hope to put together a flier in both Spanish and English by the Saturday March 11th El Salvador Delegations Send Off Ceremony. What we would like to highlight is a way to connect the SOA to issues of Globalization and the Romero celebration. We can offer the FAST as a next step.

We are hoping for a large turnout for the April 6 event at the Flood Building and then smaller gatherings each day afterwards. On weekends we will try to be a presence elsewhere such at the Mission District BART station.

TASKS: The following are some of tasks with which we need help. Please let me know if you are able to add your energy and time to specific areas.

Press release and Op Ed piece. (George Sanchez-USF, Lindasusan Ulrich) Flier (Brooks Oswald-USF)
Art and Revolution (Sara Suman-USF will make contact)
Letters to Consulates and politicians (Stephen Murphy-USF Law School)
Personlly contacting different Bay Area Rights groups about FAST 2000 and events at the Flood Building (Let me know if you have personal contacts)
Contacting speakers/representatives for April 6 event at Flood Building

Further info: Santa Clara will send 9 students and 1 USF student to the Washington D.C. delegation in April.

Thanks for your input and help.

                    –John

Last week Barbara Trott and I met with Holly Minch of the SPIN Project, a non-profit organization that does media consulting for other progressive non-profits, and discussed a media plan for the upcoming SOAW FAST 2000, beginning April 6. She brought an informed and creative perspective to the table, giving us several good ideas and lots of valuable media information.
She suggested using "GLOBALIZATION II: SOA AS THE IRON FIST OF BAD TRADE POLICY" as a possible media hook to use in our written pieces.

***TASK LIST***

I HAVE PLENTY OF INFORMATION AND EXAMPLES FOR EACH, AND HOLLY FROM SPIN CAN ANSWER ANY ADDITIONAL QUESTIONS. I ENCOURAGE YOU TO TRY AND DO ONE THING ON THE LIST, ESPECIALLY CALLING LOCAL NEWSPAPERS. Steve Murphy, John Savard, S.J., Lindasusan Ulrich, Kathleen Murphy (former employee), Barbara Trott, Monalisa Vu, Frank Kreikebaum (Santa Clara) met on Sunday, February 20 to brainstorm FAST 2000. Decisions made were to:

• Focus our attention at the Flood building, 870 Market Street, San Francisco.
• Kick-off event on April 6, noon 'till 2pm. with speakers, theatre, visuals, etc.
• Focus: to Fast in solidarity with all who have suffered at the hands of SOA graduates. To educate about SOA and the nation-wide Fast. To educate elected and appointed officials and have them commit (re-commit) themselves to this cause.

Opening Ceremony. April 6th from 12-2 p.m.

The Kickoff will be the big event with about 100 people in front of the Flood Building. We will be handing out flyers, have visuals and street theatre, and make some noise. Also, we will be setting up meetings with Latin American Consolates in San Francisco and visit them on the 6th.

The Agenda for April 6th will be:
          1. Father Savard: opening prayer and informational speech about the SOA, the SOAW, and the Fast.
          2. Music, Latin American, to put us in the mood.
          3. More music.
          4. Readings by College Students about each country we are in solidarity with.
          5. Final prayer/Music.

Who:
          1. USF Students and staff
          2. Santa Clara Students
          3. San Francisco Human Rights Organizations
          4. Local University and High School groups (e.g. La Raza, Religious Groups, Human Rights Groups/General Public)
          5. SOAW Members

April 7th-18th from 12-1 p.m.

Daily visit to the consulate of the day. (Monday through Friday)
          1. Thursday/Argentina (April 6th)
          2. Friday/Bolivia (April 7th)
          3. Saturday/Brazil (April 8th)
          4. Sunday/Chile (April 9th)
          5. Monday/Colombia (April 10th)
          6. Tuesday/El Salvador (April 11th)
          7. Wednesday/Guatemala (April 12th)

          11. Sunday/Paraguay (April 16th)
          12. Monday/Uruguay (April 17th)
          13. Tuesday/Peru (April 18th)

The Agenda for the 7th-18th will be:
          1. Every weekday have at least 2 people (USF students and SOAWWest) out there with papers, signs and information. This is for a general presence.
          2. We will invite other groups to join us that day for help. But we will have at least two people there. And they will be juice fasting.

April 19th: Closing Day.

7PM: An inter-faith prayer service and candle light vigil in front of the Flood Building.

This is how the program looks for the two-week Fast. What we are going to need help with:
Contacting speakers and Human Rights Organizations that could be present at the Kick-off on April 6th and/or participate on specific days focusing on a specific country.
Contacting politicians, high schools, local colleges and universities, contacting press, and media outlets, publicity, art work, and many, many other opportunities.

Thanks for your attention to FAST 2000.
