The Mulukukú CD Project

A benefit compilation CD is released.
All proceeds directly benefits the Maria Luisa Ortiz Cooperative and Women's Center.

The project began when Dorothy Segovia was inspired to raise funds for the clinic after meeting Dorothy Granada during her speaking tour in San Luis Obispo in August, 2000. Mulukukú is a rural village in the geographic center of Nicaragua. The Women's Health Center was established in 1991 as a response to the demands of organized women within the community. These women sought adequate reproductive health care for themselves and the other women, as well as health care for their children.

Dorothy Granada joined Center as director at its inception. Today, the Maria Luisa Ortiz Women's Center treats an average of 12,500 patients a year. The clinic is the primary health provider for the people of Mulukukú and its surrounding areas, a population of 30,000 inhabit ants. In addition, the clinic provides valuable outreach programs to the community.

You can listen to clips from each song by clicking the song title (you will need an mp3 player,)
and find out more about each artist by clicking on their name.

All proceeds from the CD project benefit the Women's Center directly.

The Mulukuku CD project began when Dorothy Segovia was inspired to raise funds for the Maria Luisa Ortiz Women's Center in Mulukuku after meeting Dorothy Granda, the U.S. nurse who is the director of the center, during her speaking tour in San Luis Obispo in 2000.

"As a local musician, I naturally thought that music would be a great way to bring awareness and support to the plight of the women in Nicaragua" she explained in a local interview. Since then, Dorothy has spoken at various churches throughout the county, using her video and acoustic guitar music to bring the plight of the clinic to the attention to those of us who can help.

Dorothy originally moved from LA County to the Central Coast to be a songwriter 1993. Since then she has performed her original acoustic guitar music at 1st Annual Morro Bay 4th of July Festival, Day with Creative Women Festival and Pismo Clam Festival and local venues throughout the county. Her style is varied, with an emphasis on folk and blues.

She currently teaches songwriting as away to express feelings at Juvenile Services Center in San Luis Obispo County. In addition, she also creates original songs for occasions such as birthdays, weddings and anniversaries through her songwriting business, Original Notes.

Dorothy is available for performances, songwriting classes and consultations for original songs.

She can be contacted by email at mulukuku@slonet.org or by phone (805) 772-7039

Ruben's Orphans: Anthology of Contemporary Nicaraguan PoetryAlso check out the new book "Ruben's Orphans: Anthology of Contemporary Nicaraguan Poetry" which is a collection of the poetry of 8 Nicaraguan poets of the post-revolutionary generation. The beauty and power of their work is but a further expression of the same spirit that illuminates the work of more famous Nicaraguan poets like Ernesto Cardenal and Giaconda Belli.
