“Like a tree that’s planted by the water ....”

December, 2013

Dear Friends and Supporters:

We thank you for your support of the Ecumenical Peace Institute over the years.  We continue to strive, in the great tradition of nonviolence, to end U.S. imperialism and to oppose militarism and attacks on civil liberties wherever they occur.

Please consider donating to the Ecumenical Peace Institute this holiday season and throughout the year so that our vital work can continue.

With your support, the Ecumenical Peace Institute:

  •  Has since 1998 held a vigil each Monday noon at the Oakland Federal Building, calling for an end to the occupations of Iraq & Afghanistan. As of this summer, we have cut back to the monthly Living Graveyard, a “street theater” event at which we mourn the deaths in the wars of occupation in Iraq and Afghanistan.
  • Held our Autumn Gathering –– at which three speakers addressed the dangers and challenges of the “Pacific Tilt”, including information on the Trans Pacific “Partnership” (TPP) and a history of the U.S. in Korea with a focus on U.S. military expansion into the South Korean island of Jeju.  EPI would be happy to share information on these issues with any interested group.
  • Organizes to stop the development of nuclear and other weapons of mass destruction and is a principal planner of the Good Friday Service of Worship and Witness at the Livermore Weapons Lab.  This year we heard from Rev. Phil Lawson who remembered Dr. King’s “I Have a Dream” speech, given 50 years ago.  Phil said, “This morning, standing as always in the shadow of the empire. . . in the shadow of the empire, Lawrence Laboratory, I want to tell you about the dream.”
  • Works with Haiti Action Committee on an ongoing basis to achieve democracy in Haiti.
  • Joined Syria Solidarity Movement in hosting Mother Agnes Mariam who is working for reconciliation between the warring groups in Syria and for freeing hostages thru nonviolent appeal.
  • Mails our newsletter, Planted by the Waters, to more than a thousand readers, offering information and in depth analysis on current peace and justice issues.
  • Alerts our supporters via email to upcoming events and provides them with vital information and analysis.  Please write us at epicalc@gmail.net to be added to this list.

We urge you to be generous in your support of EPI as we seek to continue in the path illuminated by the words of Dr. Martin Luther King:

We must move past indecision to action. We must find new ways to speak for peace in Vietnam and justice throughout the developing world –– a world that borders on our doors. If we do not act we shall surely be dragged down the long dark and shameful corridors of time reserved for those who possess power without compassion, might without morality, and strength without sight.

Now let us begin. Now let us rededicate ourselves to the long and bitter –– but beautiful –– struggle for a new world.

This is our challenge and our call.

[If you wish, you may send us your donation the old-fashioned way, and send us a check. Quelle Idée!
